Survivor guilt is one thing.
We need an audit of all wet forest landscapes that have been converted to dry schlerophyll regrowth as a result of the modern high intensity logging industry - over hundreds of thousands of hectares in the last 50 years. Dry as a tinderbox after a long drought. These are the highest fire risk areas in future.
But it will also identify at least the few remaining areas of high moisture to be preserved if only for safety if not wildlife. Same goes for Tasmania. NSW. WA.

Tears weren’t jerked ?
Heart wasn’t broken ?
Emotional manipulation wasn’t experienced ?
One thousand times more people weren’t killed in Haiti ?
Still got to play Chesterfield rugby after the doco last night ?

I didn’t choke on smoke and gasp for air - like the firies did
I didn’t rinse soot and sweat from my sore red eyes - like the firies did
I didn’t willingly drive towards the fires when all the critters were racing past the other way - like the firies did
I didn’t constantly wonder if I was going to die - like the firies did
And I don’t suffer in silence still - like the firies do.

This was very much my experience.
At the time, whilst amazed at the scale of the disaster, I felt detached from it.
I couldn’t imagine the grief (or death) of those directly involved, and turned away from the anger that poured out in the aftermath.
Watching the documentary last night was the first time I felt I was starting to understand, and this cartoon adds to that.
Good dog.

DISGRACEFUL!
First Dog you have blotted your copy book with this episode (I can’t in all honesty call it a cartoon). You take a Ph.D in bad taste today as do Crikey editors. What’s next? Gloating when someone you know tells you they have cancer? Or perhaps you already do that.
Signed: Out of here for good.

be cool, dog readers, there is no right way to mourn, grieve, howl and wail until the tears flow like a river. It is what it is.

Dear Liladlen5,
As other Dogonauts understand, the rhetorical appeal that is being used in this cartoon is ‘pathos’: a feeling of sympathy and sorrow for the misfortunes of others.
It isn’t a Chaser-style Starlight Foundation joke gone wrong.

Go ahead caller… Hello Alan? Hello, I’m a first-time caller but long-time listener, I wondered if you’d heard about this Dr Onthemoon clown who claims he’s a Ph.D and now he’s going around gloating at people who’ve misunderstood things. I’m outraged! I haven’t seen it and I’m glad, but I think they should do something about it. Did I say I was outraged?

KEITH IS NOT MY REAL NAME: How do we know it’s one person’s address, or if it is an amorphous company address? Anyway I’m not about to check it out; are you?

Err Venise, I don’t get “anonymous’s” complaint either but it appears that they have posted their email address.
