As a total side bar (sigh...no pun intended...) to the debate about whether the ad is sexist, offensive or just juvenile; the recent comment by Rupert Everett that gay actors should stay in the closet as coming out affects their career and public perceptions of their performances has a resonance here.
We have Liam Nunan a young male Brisbane actor who identifies as gay in his personal life. In his professional life he appears as a host on children's television, has starred in a some-what edgy urban stage drama for QTC this year not to mention playing the randy, over the top hetero boyfriend of this ad - all without his actual sexuality "compromising" his ability to play any role that the script requires. (And nice to see Nick Backstrom doing a fine panto-esque turn as "Dad".)
It's a silly ad, not really to my taste and just that little bit tacky. However, Barry Humphries started out as being tacky and look where he is today! (Some would say, "same".)
