Re Mark Duffett: Well, there is a clear similarity between the two. The synchrotron is very much like the University of Melbourne (+VCA): they are both appallingly managed, non-democratic institutions where the controlling board is not responsible to anyone. They can waste millions of taxpayers dollars and jeopardise careers with complete immunity. Until the state government shows any sign of life, or brain activity, the taxpayer, student, teacher and scientist all lose out - big time.

Bu99er arts colleges and music schools; why hasn't Crikey told us anything about what's going on at the Australian Synchrotron? I'm pretty sure the latter is responsible for a lot more of our money than the former.
