@Tim Mackay - To proclaim that voting is not compulsory & the law only requires you to attend a voting booth is akin to believing that drink driving or speeding isn't illegal, so long as you don't get caught. This is a misguided (and unfunny) belief. Of course voting is compulsory. The AEC publish a nice booklet about compulsory voting here which specifically addresses your claim.

I assume that Deirdre Ryan is a direct descendant of the John Ryan that arrived on the first fleet, and built the Sydney Harbour Bridge with her teeth, such is her contribution to making this country what it WAS.

as an immigrant myself, and someone who therefore cannot be considered a ‘true citizen’, on public holidays I have taken to wearing a T-shirt that reads “Australian On Purpose”

Oh Deirdre, please - too many foreigners? Surely you jest? And just when did your family arrive on the boat (or plane)?. Unless you are of Aboriginal descent, you are the product of migrants, so stop moaning.
Having said that, my concern with immigration is in terms of resources - we don’t have enough water and investment in infrastructure to support the population now….
