James...and then the silly Newspoll games ended when reality hit with Nielsen, Morgan and Essential all reporting 'no change'.

It's simple really.
Rudd tried to lure the hawks with one hand, while keeping a handful of breadcrumbs for the doves in the other.
The doves switched over to the Coalition in sheer protest that Rudd would try to suck up to the hawks.
The hawks switched over to Labor because the Coalition weren't doing a good enough job of disgracing Rudd over the matter.
The doves formed an all-round defensive cordon around the people-smugglers.
The hawks started talking dove language about those more deserving, left behind in a camp somewhere far, far away.
Another Newspoll found that most of the population are hawks, not doves.
David Attenborough pointed out that this predator:prey ratio of hawks to doves is unsustainable.
An enormous feather-fight ensued, which left Rudd standing all alone with both hawk and dove guano stuck in his hairdo, no hairdresser in sight, just some Indonesian officials standing on the shore saying, "Feel free to make a decision, just take a deep breath, you can do it."
A Newspoll survey was inundated with a huge number of feathers. A fortune teller was consulted to examine them. She reported that Labor approval was down and Coalition approval was up.

No, Mungo, let's NOT 'assume it's true' because it manifestly isn't. Once it became clear - if not earlier, then certainlyby today -that the Newspoll was a rogue , all the millions of words about the 'end of Rudd's honeymoon' written prematurely over the past week became redundant along with that poll.
