Guy, I'm sorry, but when you see a headline Levi-Strauss, do you first think philosopher, or article of clothing?

Guy, I've got to tell you I went off your work for a while, when it seemed to drift toward ranting. Those ugly words said, I can't recall any piece of journalism which has ever managed to inform my ignorance and/or shift my perspective so much in such a short space as this one has. Magnificent work.

All that analysis of the meaning of culture and the memes of small-scale and large-scale societies. In two centuries of ethnology, not one useful work written on how to prevent the implosion of a hunting-gathering society when contact with another society simultaneously takes away control of its food supply and gives it addictive substances in return. Amazing.

Thanks for this Guy. I'm much better informed than I was when I started reading your article. I think that's called journalism.
Long may it prosper at Crikey.

Thanks for your lovely article Guy.
France 2 did a good ten minutes at the top of their news this morning on Levi-Strauss. Just love the way the French cherish their philosophers.
Bizarre stuff with the anti-smoking campaign in Iraq. Regional police officers were being criticized for smoking like chimneys. When told this would shorten their live spans, they commented that the average lifespan of a senior Iraqi police officer at that time was about six months. They didn't much worry about the long term impacts of cigarette smoking.

Thank you for a delightful snippet of this man and his work, about which as an engineer I know absolutely nothing.

I must now find out more.
