You’re right - it’s all about length. I like Crikey when it’s short, sharp (and when appropriate quite shitty), but am short with contributors write at too much length. The London Review of Books it aint. For this subscriber - keep it simple.

Two things most journos know little about: economics and horse racing. They require both numeracy and some grasp of stats. A bit of commonsense doesn’t go astray either. Anyway to continue the punning, many are too used to just following the leader and relying on tips.
