In the late 1970s, when he was a RAAF fighter pilot, he was flying very low level up the west coast of the Malay peninsula, enroute Singapore to Butterworth, when a (very tall ) coconut tree struck the right wing tip of his Mirage fighter, ripping about 20cms off the wing tip.
