At a fundamental/design level, doesn't it just look like a complex solution for an easy problem? We spend all this time and money trying to put carbon back underground after nature did a terrific job of burying it thousands of years ago, hoping to liberate some energy in the transaction. What an appalling waste of time. Stop digging it up and then we can stop trying to bury it again.

About time for the protagonists to inject some reality into this discussion!

The previous bleatings of the CCS brigade were beyond belief, so it is now excellent to find that the lead institution within this country has placed on the public record opinion that CCS will be too late, too risky and too expensive to be of practical use in the foreseeable future.

I look down my paddock in wonderment as my little landholding, 50% of which is set aside for trees, slowly devours the skyline. No more views of the other side of the valley - the trees are maturing and the wildlife is becoming more complex.

And, no - I have no intention of cutting them down. They are hundreds of beautiful examples of carbon abatement.

Burying waste products has long since been shown to be bad policy and practice. Why we ever embarked on that track for CO2 is beyond belief when it has been demonstrated that we can produce useful products from CO2 using both photosyntheses and catalytic chemistry Putting greater effort into that work has more chance of resulting in acceptable methods of dealing with coal fired power station refuse than burying the stuff.

Time to stop thinking "emissions sequestration" and start thinking "carbon sequestration". A CO2 molecule is a CO2 molecule, no matter whether it's intercepted in an exhaust outlet or photosynthesized out of the big blue sky.
