I'm not. The majority of beat cops handle this sort of thing all the time, calmly, compassionately and professionally. That never gets in the paper.

It's not hard. When a person starts by stating his wishes rather than simply acting on them, that's opening up a bargaining process. You make bargains, as in "All right mate, we'll take you out for a smoke if you promise to behave yourself and come back in quietly when you finish it, OK?"

Me personally? A few, and without access to physical force if it all went pear shaped. Hard to compare apples to apples and psychotic episodes to psychotic episodes, of course.

But according to the Coroner, in the lead-up to the fatal incident Plasto was waiting to see a doctor and saying he wanted a smoke. If you think that's a psychotic episode, then you've never seen a psychotic episode, much less been stuck in a confined space with one. This was the comedown from a psychotic episode, hours afterward. It's stressful, it's frightening, and the last thing the person needs is a cop who thinks his own assertion of power is more important than the chain-smoking patient's wish to have the simple relief of a smoke.

Common dogf***, not police training or "psychobabble", would tell any normal person that the solution to this problem is to accompany the patient outside and let him have a smoke.

Psychologists seem to have some idea that the real world is something like fairyland. How many people have you managed to get cooperation from when they are in the middle of a psychotic episode as this man obviously was.

No, getting him to cooperate is what matters. Cooperating is not quite the same thing as being under control.

Enough of the psycho-babble. We're talking here of a real life situation dealing with a violent mentally ill man. No time for self analysis. Getting him under control is what matters here. The real experts in mental health here have a lot to answer for. Obviously he fooled the doctor into thinking he was compliant and so no urgency was put into the examination by the Psychiatric Registrar. The waiting was the straw that broke the camel's back. This was caused by the Darwin Hospital. Maybe it is their procedures that need to be put under the microscope.

Not everything comes down to training. A police officer is expected to bring some life skills to the job. One of those life skills is enough self confidence and self knowledge not to need to assert alpha-male dominance every time a person wants a smoke or says "get away from me". A lot of deaths result from officers' insistence on being feared and obeyed rather than details of training.

It seems individual police officers are being blamed for the lack of training given by the NT Police Force (Service?) in dealing with mentally ill people. Good one. Mentally ill people can exhibit strength far and above what is normal when they are in a psychotic state and to restrain them is a nightmare. In a volatile situation such as this police may well have to use more force than usual considering that if the person escaped he may well be a danger to others. In the heat of the struggle it is not always easy to judge what is sufficient force. As far as I'm concerned, criticism from those such as Coroners and laweyrs who have never seen an angry man counts for nothing. Thank you to those Police Officers who are doing their best to keep our society safe under extraordinarily difficult circumstances including attacks from the physically soft in society such as coroners, lawyers, politicians and the like

Good to see this appalling story put in the news column. Without Gosford we'd probably never hear of these NT horrors.
