Re "The Fitness Industry" (Tips and Rumours, Monday October 26). If Robert Barnes is seriously suggesting an 8 week course is even barely adequate to train people to work in an industry that can - and does - place people's lives at risk, he needs to find another career. Advertising, perhaps, where credibility is not such an important pre-requisite.

It is well known that training standards in the fitness induistry are inadequate to the point of being dangerous. And unlike the original contributor to "Tips and Rumours", I did work in the industry for many years; indeed, my partner is one of the most highly-respected people in the fitness training industry and she is also concerned about the plethora of low-quality providers. Here is a lesson Mr Barnes should learn: having a piece of paper to say you have completed a course does not make you a quality practitioner. Let me ask him this: if eight weeks is enough, what to PE teachers waste the other 3 years and ten months of their degrees on?

"I think Irfan Yusuf and other commentators are missing the point. The Tamil Tigers have never attacked Australia, and their supporters have peacefully operated here for many years."

Niall, peacefully operated doing what? Helping organise and justify suicide bombing? Surely the same excuse could be used by local supporters of HAMAS and Hezbollah. What was the last time Hezbollah attacked Australia?
