You know what? Fuck the Walkleys.

I’m constantly outsounded at the amount of quality material i get dropped into my email box every single day.

Kudos to everyone involved.

And I’ve just renewed my subscription for my second year.

Yep, time for New Media awards. I do believe Google might give some more back with some sponsorship.

The sisters have their Ernies. The greenies their Bad Developers/Golden Toaster and vice versa Goldman award. The scientists their Eurekas. The authors their Miles Franklin or whatever. The painters their Archibalds. The developers and corporates even have their greenwashing Banksias. The humanitarians their Right Living award.

But expect a cold wind to blow from Old Media if you do institute your own awards. Power has to be taken.

Apropos my post here, why don't you do what News Corp did when they spat the dummy with the Walkleys, and start your own awards? Nominations to be submitted in various categories by contributors, voted on by subscribers. Call them the Maynes.

The Australian media has always come across to me as a very close nit bunch. I suppose that is why I’ve stopped buying the newspaper and just use crikey, abc.net and The Guardian for my news.

I do think the nomination of news.com.au as extremely erroneous. They have problems keeping the web site up to date with just basic news, especially state news and they push over hyped ‘dog born with two heads’ stories. Their mobile app is crap (especially in comparison to the ABC).

No two ways about it - Guy Rundle well deserved a look in.

But let’s consider the potential danger on Awards night.

As Guy begins his acceptance speech, an audience member runs full tilt upon the stage in protest at the sheer iniquity.

Alas he is no match for big boned Guy and bounces off.

That slightly medicated yet not unstoppable force is no match for the superb writer and immovable object we hold dear: Mr Guy Rundle.
