Thanks Margaret. I think you'll find that NT News has no bigger fans than us here at Crikey.

We were at the Walkley finalists announcement last night and I couldn't help but think that there should be a section in the Walkleys for best front page.

If there were, NT News would win hands down.

We never said it wasn't a serious issue they were covering -- more an observation on how they went about it -- and for that we tip our hats at 'em.

And another thing - if you actually read the article "S***, meet fan" it is a legitimate serious article with plenty of input from reputable experts about how the Power and Water Corporation's 'management' of a sewage plant is leading to the environmental damage of a natural waterway. The tabloid headlines and photos simply act as a (very successful) method of drawing attention to the story.

I think the NT News is displaying more editorial skill than most in today's newspaper business. There are only about 223,000 people living in the Territory but thanks to the internet the NT News regularly attracts a national - and global audience - with its eye-catching headlines and front page articles. Sure, its tacky and tabloid, but it is uniquely tacky and tabloid - no drunken Hollywood celebrities falling out of clubs for them, thank-you very much. I suspect it is punching well above its weight in terms of advertising revenue from its website.
