Obama is what!

Obama is not black.

What an insult to caucasian origin peoples of this world. Obama is white as I am Australian - not Danish Not English Not German Not New Zealand - even though I have these ancestors in my line.
I am Australian , white, and the current President of the United States of America is an American and he is white,!
Get it right - get over your school boy fetish and start living in the realistic world.
This man aint no Jesse Jackson.

@RAYMONDCHURCH, you're making the assumption that his opponents are rational fellows who would pat him on the back if he turned it down. They aren't. They wouldn't. They would just find something else to complain about. They would in fact probably complain that he turned it down.

But yes, it is more weight on his shoulders at the end of the day. It is a hell of a job. How can you make any progress when the opposition is trying to convince everyone that you're a commie, nazi, etc, who is coming to eat their babies?

I mean really, it's a wonder he's got anything done.

You've got it right Harvey. I'm bemused by all this talk of how he shouldn't get it until he has 'outcomes'. Well bless me, what kind of process you have makes a hell of a difference to the kind of outcomes that are possible and I'm assuming he got it for making such a huge shift in how he speaks and includes that new and exciting possibilities of political and social action have become possible. I'm not really up on the inner workings of the Norwegian political consciouness so I don't know how influential that was, but any observer can see the nature of the political discourse world wide has changed at an international level. The man speaks to to the cause of tolerance, determination and commitment to action on the most difficult and daunting dilemnas of our time. He speaks to a dialogue between differing points of view not a trumphant trumpeting of some meagre, narrow truth. A well deserved award out of left field, that has, as Guy pointed out, undermined the difficult task of building a workable American social and political consensus on more social problems than you can poke a stick at.

I had thought Pres Obama had the intelligence to appreciate there was a hellava lot more in it for him as President, and as a person if he had turned the Peace Prize down. Surely he could see the howls of protest from his opponents coming if he accepted. Even many of his supporters are frowning and shaking their heads. A thankyou but no thankyou, plus a small dignified speech of humility etc etc. would have been a much better outcome. But he is a far superior intelligent being than I. Must be something in all this I am not seeing or hearing. So far he seems to have just applied more weight to his already burdened shoulders.

Dr Harvey Tarvydas

The great man has actually done a remarkable thing. Not too many will be able to appreciate or measure the contribution. As a testiment to the remarkable superiority of Norwegian politicians they were able to feel and measure the contribution with intellectual competence.
Psychology, Psychology, Psychology is everything.
One would have to be a psychopath or dead not to feel the huge and exhillarating sense of sensible future for man even in the middle of a global financial crisis as the great man swirled around internationally talking to everyone and leaving a genuine feeling of conversational change everywhere as never before done by anybody.
Alas we don't have the benefit of the wonderful medical apparatus 'the double blind trial' to conclusively establish whether it was the great man's arrival or the disgusting creeps departure that caused the effect.

How bad does the US economy have to get before Obama can use it as a legitimate excuse to get out of Afghanistan and Iraq entirely?

Anyway, that's a tangent.

Where are the mass protests demanding an end to DADO, The Wars or any of the other countless issues that the left care about? Simply voting for the man isn't enough, you've got to hold his feet to the fire in a way that gives him enough cover and urgency to actually implement policies for which he'll get a lot of flack from the right. Get on TV, get on the streets, but for f--k sake don't sit at home bitching and moaning about how he hasn't done anything yet.

The question is, what the hell have you done lately you lazy pajama wearing twerps? Put up or shut up.

* That question is directed at liberal American's who are unhappy with Obama's progress thus far.

The peace prize is awarded by a panel which consists entirely of current or ex-policitians. NORWEGIAN politicians (currently the panel is 3 leftists and 2 rightists). Not like the technical experts who award the other prizes. So of course, the prize is political (and gets awarded to less-than-exemplary leaders), and also more importantly, it actually reflects a European-peripheral view of the prize winner. In this case, Obama, whom the Europeans generally (but not completely) love because he promised to "listen" to them. Which the Euros hear as meaning giving them a right-of-veto over American foreign policy.

It may very well be politically inconvenient for Obama but it says more about the Norwegian political mindset than anything else.

Don't be too hard on Harold Wilson. He kept Britain out of Vietnam and, unlike Blair and Brown, led a real labour party. I hope Obama is the new Harold Wilson, but I doubt it.

Nicely summed up Guy. It was my initial impression that the academy hadn't done him any favours, just raised the bar of expectations a little higher.

The only thing going for him is the short attention span of the media cycle.
Unfortunately, when he goes to accept the prize, it will all explode again. :-(
