I'm all for equality and find racial bigotry appalling. I spent five years at Uni and was surrounded by 'white' people, Asians, Indians, Italians, Grecians, Singaporeans/Malaysians, Lebanese - think of an ethnic group, any ethnic group, and I've spent time around them - a lot of good times, I will say. My best friend is Malaysian, another best friend caucasian, and two very dear friends are Chinese and Iranian.
What sets Australia apart from other countries, who's people we are educating, is that we DO care for their welfare. That's why we have many systems in place, we have translated texts and pamphlets and leaflets full of information about 'fitting into' this country, and what government services are available to help with the adjustment. Please feel free to correct me, but I've never heard of places like India ever putting in such a strong support system for migrating Aussies - my caucasian friend worked there for over a year and was treated disdainfully by the public, particularly males. She was talked down to and the whole time felt the overwhelming urge to come back to Oz and be around people who weren't so intense about a social heirarchy.
My Malaysian friend knew well that after finishing her degree, she needed to seek application for Australian permanent residence, and she did it. My Chinese friend moved here for high school and speaks beautiful English - because she was smart and practised it. I can't see other countries putting in the same amount of effort as we do to make our immigrants feel welcome - most of us do welcome them, it's just a few who stuff it up for the rest (eg. in Sydney riots).
I'm just saying that these people need to stop complaining AS much (although complaining is what we sometimes do best here in Oz!) and realise their lives are, on average, easily more enjoyable than back at home.

The CSL is only part of the story. The Australian Government announced in December 2008 that they would priotise processing of visa applications for permanent skilled migration. CSL is the third priority, following employer sponsored migration and other sponsored migration (including by state/territory governments or family) for both on-shore and off-shore applicants. Thus, the visa applications from overseas graduates from Australian universities, TAFEs and private RTOs, although meeting skill requirements, unless sponsored, will languish in the lowest priority group for processing, even if boosted with additional MODL pints. Furthermore employer sponsorships (job offer) has to be for three years (two for regional locations). That, not the CSL arrangements, is the key change in the rules, which were extensively promulgated of by the Australian Government

This probably arose from the increasing number of students moving into low-cost housing areas in the western and northern suburbs of Melbourne and Sydney’s south-western suburbs

PROVE IT

“This has created a powder keg situation as the newcomers find themselves soft targets for youth gangs with well-established reputations for nastiness,” Birrell says.

PROVE IT

I congratulated you for not resorting to imagined facts in part one of your three part article. Sorry to see you are just as big a muckraker as the previous journos trying to hitch a ride at your fellow citizensexpense. Its okay they are on B_gans and W_gs. But if you need to feel superior.
