Its a little disturbing to consider, but some of your suggestions about price differentiation might actually be realised e.g.
* a “premium” SMH and a low-rent version,
* splitting up the paper into individually purchasable sections, with bizarre Woolworths style pricing (Local News $0.35, Foreign Affairs $0.49, Entertainment and Gossip $0.38 etc, buy 3 sections for $0.96)
as well as end-of-day discounting of unsold stock (which I’m sure newsagents would do if permitted).

Paddy, we get missing / incorrectly spelt words with the ‘premium’ product. The BWR product is apt to be soaked with duck’s vomit.

Mind you, despite being a little “shop soiled” the B&W&R article looks like an absolute steal.
I’m sure no one will mind the odd missing word when it’s only 0.49c.
