It will be a shame if this incident means that politicians become hidden away. We need politicians to be available and sharing experiences with ordinary people. However it needs to be remembered that this was a private not a political matter.

Agreed, well said Tom. This article (and the rest of the media around this incident) seems to be asking… “But what if Rann deserved it?”

“Blame the victim” makes for good tabloid journalism, but has no place in our legal system.

It’s an adaptation of the infamous fiasco surrounding Queensland Premier Peter Beattie’s intersect with ex Ministerial colleague Merri Rose. No doubt in the next few months Rann will need some convincing lines so here are some of Beattie’s Houdini one-liners: “I accept that my Scottish ancestry and Presbyterian strong views…are not necessarily in accordance with community standards!” No? Well then what about: “”I’ve always acted honestly and appropriately and .. that’s the way you act when you’re in government”. Marginal improvement but, this was the bulls-eye: “A suppression order was made and I like everyone else will abide by it”. There you go Mike, best of luck.!

This is bogus. The alleged assault is public interest regarding security of elected officials. There is no justification for violence like that.

There is no public interest in a politicians personal life, a bitter ex husband, or lurid innuendo about a glamour blonde, and saying that I recall an early episode of West Wing involving a Mary Magdalen type fictional character.

The editorial intro in today’s crikey is about the most bogus excuse for muck racking I’ve ever read in about 5 years of subscribing. And you will never catch me voting ALP either.

Yet another eloquent argument for a tort of privacy. Keep at it Mr Editor! As Richard Ackland points out, you will make lawyers rich yet.

I believe that Mike Rann has inflicted some serious damage on people in his own State and doesn’t deserve one ounce of sympathy. His attempts to paint himself as a poor stiff upper lip victim make my stomach churn. He has not one drop of sympathy from me. His spin on his own bad behaviour just irritates and makes me more determined to vote against him at the coming election.
