Justin Templer's (Monday, Daily email Comments) and New Cassandra's cynicism aside, I thought Justin Scarr makes some good points contrasting water safety in Australian and Asian cultures. Philippines is comprised of over 7000 islands -- where are all the competent swimmers? I've had many conversations here with NGO workers, local fisherfolk or boat operators about the lack of water skills amongst the local population.

The human body is made for water. There are many observable physiological effects that result from the body being immersed in water. It's natural. Swimming needs to become a usual activity here. When the waves get over two-feet high, I'm the only one in the water! When a local is retrieved from the water in an unconscious state, people stand around and cry. CPR is unheard of.

I'd be glad to be involved in such a programme here. Good luck RSLSS!

You know, the bar trade in Samoa is picking up again - the old customers are floating back in.
