I wish that these times were straightened but I fear that we'll be in dire straits for some while yet, making it all the more difficult for deserving causes.

I appreciate this biting reflection on Sydney society. Believe me I do. Priority read. But I think the author might have achieved a higher 'plain' (as in 'straitened', I so don't get to preach on spelling usually being so bad at it) by also weaving in something about you know ... the charity - families with Downs Syndrome kids and how to support and indeed learn from them? Somehow, ironically, that omission seems to prove the credentials of the author to access her milieu, the zoo that is Sydney.

I take great exception to your ageist criticism of the great Sydney Irish icon and very funny comedian Bryan Doyle. Brian is an absolute gem who gets howls of laughter at huge corporate functions like the annual St Paddies Day lunch, hosted by the Lansdowne Club and attended by over 1500 people. I still laugh at his Bronwyn Bishop lines such as the one about her being half German and half shepherd and "I'm not sure what BB uses on her hair, but if I has some .... I wouldn't be wasting it on my hair”. I hope I can still make people smile like he does when i get to be his age.
