Jill: He means the ABC TV department (general programming) as opposed to the News department. They are two separate programming units and there's always tension between them for airtime and money.

Can someone explain what Glenn Dyer means by the ABC "trying to grab control of" programs shown onABC TV networks and produced I thought, perhaps wrongly, by the ABC? His two examples were Foreign Correspondent and Australian Story.

The spin: less money spent on fewer correspondents equals more coverage (read agency material "re-purposed")

Terrific report, Glenn.

I think we all want to see the ABC produce a 24-hour feed for digital TV and the web. They are clearly in the best position to do it, and it would show just how cheap and nasty Sky News is with its borrowed stories from Seven, Nine and Sky UK.

But this can't come at the expense of foreign correspondents. Many of these bureaus - Moscow, Johannesburg, Bangkok, etc - are the ONLY Australian journalists reporting back to Australians. It was only a few years ago they closed a bureau in Brussels, meaning the entire European continent has to be covered from London. As you quite rightly say, 'hubbing' only produces derivative packages that look and read the same as every other international news service. Indeed, if you're reporting via wire feed you might as well do it in Australia - there's no advantage in being overseas at all.

Seriously concerning. Please stay on the case, Glenn. Need more updates on this.
