Amusingly (for me anyway), Clarkson of Top Gear fame, refers to those who take their lead on matters climate change from a perspective of emotion over science as 'eco-mentalists'. While I agree with the notion that if it can be avoided it should be and that to pollute is bad, I’m stuck between a (non radioactive) rock and a hard place (where Garrett must sleep at night) on the wider question. Back in the glory days of predictions of most imminent doom with suggestions we had to have this turned round by 2010 or we’d all die a horrible death by drowning (polar ice cap) or cancer (skin or lung) or be savaged by genetically mutated killer penguins, the beards and women against everything but especially climate change, kind of had me roughly on their side. After all and as I said, if you don’t have to pollute, don’t. What has me wavering again is that the glory days were in 2008 and were in general supported by Governments from here to Westminster (excluding the whacky reality TV show that is the USA). Then we got the GFC and somehow through the necessity to stave of the total collapse of the world wide banking system and the necessity to stimulate the economy, our life expectancy went up again and the notion of looming death seems to have gone away. Did I miss something, have the bankers fixed it? Was it that global warming was actually being caused by big piles of cash radiating capitalism .... or what? ....and please eco-mentalists, find something more convincing than the penguins in the bay are 1.6g lighter this year than last to convince me, I want to come back but at the moment you do look just a tad discredited and a bit well...er..mad.
