I sometimes wonder if people are nasty because they are religious, or if they are nasty anyway, and just find religion a convenient way to push their views on others?
I think it is the latter. There are very gracious and inclusive religious people too. (But are they nice because they are religious, or are they nice anyway and when they embrace religion, they show it through that vehicle?)

Thanks for the article and careful research.

I understand these people will also be presenting a petition to government MP’s today in an effort to have the day made an “official” annual day.

Let’s see how much further the Rudd Labor government is willing to go to appease Catholic and Protestant fundamentalists. It could well happen.

You gotta hand it to these people for effective lobbying and PR strategy, though. Religion drives the whole thing, yet religious language is either in the background or completely absent.

If these people were honest they would call themselves the National Christian Marriage Coalition and call their day National Christian Marriage Day. Transparency, it seems, is not a Christian value, not to mention honestly presenting research.

Let’s hope the fundies don’t find the biblical definition of marriage. They might be shocked to whom are married! Why is it these drongos have a say in anything? This evolution thingy is just way too slow these days.

They also spectacularly fail to explain why, if marriage is about the best environment in which to raise children, they wish to continue to deny it to gay couples WHO ALREADY HAVE CHILDREN.

Always interesting that with all of the “biblical” models of family to choose from, we are once again presented with man+woman+marriage=family
Both the Hebrew scriptures and the New Testament give any number of alternatives that give a much fuller understanding of what family might be about.
