who said this:
"Rupert Murdoch clearly has grasped the correlation between quality, influence and value in the news business and is investing heavily in quality journalism: buying The Wall Street Journal; building superb new printing plants, "cathedrals of print", in Britain; and hiring top journalists to ensure a strong flow of quality content to his mastheads. He's no pushover - journalists are expected to do more with less and managers are expected to manage more efficiently - but he also appears to realise that, as the competition for people's attention becomes more intense, it is those companies that hold their nerve and investin quality that will flourish in the long term. "
was it the same chris warren? or another?

Well, it is Kali Yuga y'know. The End Time, the Falling of the Leaves. And the Revenge of the Logos. I got marched out of News Ltd way back in 1992 at the summons of Kaganovitch/Trahigan. The newly minted Media Alliance was no help to me then - they were too busy cosying up to Mahogany Row. The place already felt like a gulag, tho and I was down on myself for even being there - but you gotta live.
The real point is that the News Ltd stable had been traducing the Word (i.e. the utterance that mediates one's personal connection to the community) for decades, from back when the jounalists union was a sort of gentlemens club. Murdoch's public brow-beating of journos who got out of line, his editorial staring down of unfavoured politicians and spur-of-the-moment sackings hardly went un-noticed by the likes of quislings like Hartigan and time-servers like Ackerman. It is in this sense that Murdoch has defined an epoch. He and his Orcs have gone forth and multiplied.

Just wondering Chris, how long do you think the old Dame will live past 100, and what does that mean for the broadsheet?

"Journalists who have been working for News Limited loyally for many years are being tapped on the shoulder, hustled quietly up to the human resources department and shown the door, without even the chance to say goodbye to their workmates."

This manifestation of corporate brutality is one reason why, 15 years ago, I decided never to work for a "corporation" again. Then it was the corporatisation of the universities. Now look at them: vocational colleges pretending to be businesses. Infested with foreign-student rorts and conflicts of interest. Humanities and pure sciences reduced or eliminated. Melb. Uni is sacking 220 more staff. As Peter Singer wrote the other day, universities are not universities without critical thought. Staff are contractually gagged and defenestrated when convenient. Now newspapers are trying to fulfill their vital role by boning journalists. What will we be left with, News Ltd's phalanx of right-wing columnists? Rupert should realise that no one needs them. They are dispensable adjuncts to news and serious analysis. The ways News Ltd is heading, we'll have generic news and scant analysis. Hey, we can get that anywhere!
