If memory serves, the successful series The Block was based on a concept that was alleged to be a knock-off itself. According to a legal action by the producer, whose series concept entitled “Dream Home” was substantially the same as his, Nine merely changed the locale from two competing couples in free-standing homes to four couples in an apartment block.

The outcome of this was a legal action that Nine won, demonstrating their series was different enough not be a breach of copyright, but of course that wasn’t sufficient for Nine, who then sued the producer successfully in the Federal Court for “groundless threats of legal proceedings”.

In any case, it further illustrates just how careful Producers have to be when dealing with the 800 pound gorillas of the tv industry.

Neighbours has been on air since 1985 (Seven in 1985, Ten subsequently). That is not 30 years.

It seems Cress and Barbour might be one-hit (and only one series of that hit was successful) wonders.

It never did loads for me and by memory it may have been out of their control but Channel 7 only hanging onto Friends for one season would have to be up there.
