Also Mr Stokes seemingly non gentlemanly behaviour(dumping then leaving town) would give the rival rag some enjoyment. Every article about Ms Gordon gets to mention his actions. The next time you think of how the humiliation Ms Gordon has been dragged through spare a thought what would have happened to her if she was plain Jane from the local check out.
