Barack Obama: he’s bringing dignity back
|
The new global model for political deportment is rolling through Europe this week. He met the Russian leaders before heading for Italy and the G8 summit. Quite separate from his politics or policies, the new global model for political deportment continues to reinforce the idea that effective political leadership does not have to be predicated on the old bag of tricks of gimmickry, populism, sound bites and trickery. There isn’t much dignity left in the higher reaches of political life, a point beautifully made this week in an essay by David Brooks in The New York Times. The “dignity code”, as Brooks calls it, has been “completely obliterated” by the pressures of modern life.
But dignity in politics is not completely lost, says Brooks, for one simple reason: Barack Obama.
Which makes you wonder why someone as intelligent as Malcolm Turnbull spends his life at the top of Australian politics rolling out “debt trucks”, fake emails and populist sound bites when — as one of the few genuinely thoughtful and articulate politicians around — he could follow the new global model for political deportment and be himself. |

This is an excellent point. While there is probably no-one on the planet who could match Obama’s famed poise it is worth aiming for. Rudd generally comes across as serious but the poise and dignity that he seeks is only partially achieved. Gillard’s poise has been much noted but she is too frequently in attack mode to achieve Obama’s level of dignity.
Turnbull’s leadership has been one long pretence and it shows. His natural inclination is to be a patrician small-l liberal but instead he pretends to be a populist opportunist trotting out hackneyed Liberal scare campaigns. Andrew Robb is the only senior Liberal I have seen who comes across with much genuine dignity.
