I laughed out loud when Tony Jones said "A song for Malcolm" after Stand By Your Man was played. Genius. The Chaser boys should be jealous.

I append a comment to issue no. 15, since in issue no. 17, the same nonsense is peddled about Martin Luther as before. At least we now know that (a) Gerard Henderson doesn't read the comments, or if he does can't comprehend them or bother to check what they might mean; (b) Gerard Henderson doesn't have the time to indulge in a few seconds of actual research; and (c) twee repetition only establishes the ignorance of the repeater, not the object of the repetition. Would that Mr. Henderson were afflicted by anfectungen than over-confidence:

Rather than awaiting a reply from Lateline presenter Leigh Sales that Martin Luther was afflicted by self-doubt, a few seconds of research would have provided the required insight. Doesn’t the private sector embrace the actual enterprise of information seeking?

Luther’s decision to enter an Augustinian monastery was a difficult one (the payoff for a vow made during an horrific thunderstorm) and he was haunted by insecurity about his salvation (he dubbed these insecurities Anfectungen or Afflictions). While he flung himself into the life of a monk with vigor, he remained plagued by anxieties and uncertainties. It wasn’t until he began his first lectures on the Psalms that he began to develop an assurance about his life and his faith, especially when he affirmed the doctrine of justification by grace alone.

Even then, while it might be said that Luther became more certain of God and his salvation, he never became fully secure in human society - unsurprising given the hostile response by some to his theology.

Sadly this is not history-changing information, nor will it lead to a re-evaluation of the Protestant Reformation or the Lutheran church - commonplace information rarely does - but it might lead to a re-evaluation of snide asides based on remarkable ignorance. No wonder Sales hasn’t bothered with a reply.

I wouldn't mind seeing some of that bushfire footage from 1851 that you say was left out of the Lateline show. Any links?

That's funny - a few hours ago this article was titled 'Guy Rundle sees Murdoch as Stalin', and it featured an excerpt from Rundle's "hysterical" denunciation of News Limited Personnel. Now its title has changed to "Tim Palmer channels Tammy Wynette", and the Guy Rundle bit has been excised.

That does make my above comment somewhat incongruous. It would probably be best if you excise that comment as well. And this one.

I assume that the Pure Poison Boys will be getting onto this right away. After all, they were quick to pounce on 'The Australian' after the paper altered its obituary of Frank Devine earlier this afternoon.

Guy Rundle's "rather hysterical article", in which he compares everyone whom he disagrees with at News Limited to Stalin and his coterie is funny, but what makes it funnier is that, two posts later, he is in moral outrage mode, fulminating that Greg Sheridan, in a "rather hysterical article", libelled Antony Loewenstein.

Obviously, Rundle needs to learn a thing or two about irony - incidentally, the tagline for the article he wrote between his 'News Ltd is the Soviet Union' and 'Libel is bad' articles.

It is just as well Gerard Henderson's Sydney Institute is known to be heavily funded by right-wing companies to whom he is indebted-to the point of compromised- I note his wife too is at the Sydney Institute and that the same man has a PHD in Arts and Law. Otherwise I would think Gerard Henderson to be a bitchy old fagot who does no research on his subject at all. Furthermore, I would imagine he was driven by the same hatred for anyone/thing who deviates from the minds(?) of the madder sections of the lunatic, fundamentalism of the Catholic church.
Except for the fact he is well educated (not that I would call Xavier one of the better schools in Melbourne), I would have been of the distinct opinion that his viperous, ad hominem attack on Guy Rundle was motivated by envy of Rundle's magnificent writing. Rundle's soaring lyricism, his wit and his eloquence leave Henderson's writings sitting like scattered, blobs of mouse-shit. Mouse-shit also happens to be the name of a particularly hot chilly, used extensively in South East Asia. It appears to have migrated south and taken root in Sydney.
I have to say there is no one like a Catholic who can-in fits of envy-spew out enough rubbish to equal the main garbage-dump in Mumbai.
