Full marks to Michael Byrne. He's that rare beast, on these pages at least: a Christian who can outline why he's offended by a FDOTM cartoon without resorting to using this as an excuse to be intolerant of other religions. Well done to you, sir. Sadly, I suspect others will ignore this opportunity to learn from you.

"Christians are fair game for insults or bullying, perhaps because we tend to quietly write letters like this one, rather than riot in the streets or trash magazine offices."

that argument is like a foot-fault ... what you're really saying, Marcus, is that Christians are BETTER than those crazy heretics. admit it.

Julian - the obvious reason why i'm being triumphalist is because we're winning, and it feels goooooood. Quite aside from its reiki-like effect on my muscle groups and joints, i'm doing no more than reporting and commenting on what's going on - that the right is falling apart here and in the States. I have also however, written a brace of articles pointing out what a malign travesty British Labour has become, and how David Cameron's Tories have comprehensively outclassed them, and yesterday that those on the left looking for a white house role in the Honduras coup seemed dumb and reflex.

If attacking the right involves ridicule, satire, unfair metaphors, ridicule, litotes, and umm ridicule, so be it. Let's face is Tony Abbott much else than the manner in which he's described above.? More truth in jest..... All the above blagues were attached to rational arguments.

As for whining about tright-wing triumphalism that's nonsense. I criticised News Ltd for narrowing and right-shifting the political spectrum of its coverage, and for its blatant slanting of its news sections, as a disservice to Australian debate, and as an expression of cowardice - and in the lead-up to both the Oz and US elections I pointed out that the right were wrapping themselves in a triumphalist bubble that had made it impossible for them to read reality, evidenced by the John Howard cult, and the 'America is a conservative country' mantra. I'm not asking for an umpire to adjudicate - i'm trying to demonstrate their worthlessness in the court of public opinion.

Yes, the tide will turn. So ride the wave while it lasts. I'm a bit hurt that you left out the bit about Peter Costello being made of processed chicken meat. And the Sanford kidney machine thing - that was genuine admiration. I mean duhhh.
