I watched a TED talk recently that stated instead of teaching kids calculus as school we should be teaching them statistics. Seems relevant that many people don't seem to be able to comprehend the idea of that these crashes are not likely to be statistically significant even if you do lump them all into a single "airbus" classification regardless of different models involved.

I used to fly Yemenia in the 80s when they flew already-old 727s and the like. I was working in Yemen at the time. It was an experience to be avoided but they always landed. I saw a Yemenia A310 in Addis Ababa or Nairobi a couple of years ago and thought that it was good that they had upgraded! Maybe it was the one which has been lost? Whatever, it would not be unusual for an airline to change aircraft on a journey that passed through its hub. I don't know how they advertise that flight - but if you're flying Yemenia, you know you're not up with the high-class outfits anyway.

Anyhow, I noticed yesterday that the anti-Airbus journalism had started and said so to my wife. Crap, bandwagon journalism is so prevalent these days and I'm sick of it. We can expect even the slightest incident involving an Airbus to make the fromt or second pages now for at least a month. There will be plenty - blown tyre, turnbacks for emergency light etc - get a life those journos! I also knew two people on AF447, so from that point of view I could do without more trash reporting.

I've read a similar report on PPRuNe. Apparently it's a common practice for Yemenia to operate the sector from Paris to Yemen with an A330 and then change to the A310 for the last sector to the Comoros.

Dear Ben

i heard reports(i think on the abc) where the victims families said that they changed from a new plane in France to an old plane in Yemen. Is this to dodge inspection, a PR blindfold(where reporters are look your best) or normal procedure?
