There is too much speculation here and elsewhere in the media to come to any judgment yet. How long do we have to wait for the AFP to put us out of our misery? Because assuredly they must know who wrote that email; or at the very least which computer/email account it came from (I know if I was going to send an incriminating email I would covertly watch for someone to leave their computer/account open long enough to sneak in....or it could be a conspiracy that extends to the IT managers but of course that is very unlikely (mine are probably reading this! not you guys obviously :-)).

Here is another bit of speculation: if Godwin Grech really was innocent why would he have the need for a hospital bed? If someone completely unconnected to himself originated that email why would its discovery cause such consternation? Would it not have been proof of his innocence?

Thanks, Guy Rundle, for articulating my own vague feeling of unease over the treatment of Godwin Grech during the last week or so. You express so well the sense of compassion this man as aroused. Whatever the degree of his involvement in the case of the forged email, one feels that his self-esteem,even his health, and above all the career to which he has devoted his life, have all been sadly compromised. Will those who made use of him give any further consideration to his future well-being?

As so often, the literary end of the commentariat nails it nicely. I think this is probably about how it was, although we are unlikely ever to know. I dealt briefly with Godwin Grech two or three years ago. Very eager to please but not necessarily switched on. Prime target for someone with an agenda - which I wasn't particularly but these guys were. Very sad.

All this stuff about Turnbull's inexperience. Please, spare me. Packer ran Ch9 Sunday show because it was political. He hired Turnbull because of his political brain. And so on.

The Republic Movement was politics.

Indeed that particular criticism has been about the most gormless I've seen from the Big Media this last 10 days. Turnbull must be filled with chagrin. Christian Kerr for instance before jumping to The Oz described Turnbull as superior at 'wet work'. True, just ask Rose Jackson and George Newhouse. That was an abbatoir knife on the front page leveraging Zionist prejudice in the old home district.

.....

So this is what might add Guy to balance out your beautiful writing - substitute Alistair Jordan or Lachlan Harris as an alternative figure to Malcolm Turnbull, because they would equally hold to the narrative above. Josh Lyman all.

Again I recall only 6 weeks ago the press gallery across the spectrum were shaking their heads at the PM's media officers questioning whether blatant lying was now part of their modus operandi. We never did get a resolution of that question actually.

But John you left out the best part (although Guy had already nailed it perfectly). "Abetz is a lost cause and doesn't matter." A forensic millipede - if such a thing could exist. Of course it can exist. It's what the Liberal Party was made for.

Lovely thoughtful piece of writing. The bloodlust was disturbing, and Question Time last week, was one of the most infantile performances I have ever heard, from both sides of the house. No grace, no leadership, no charm. What have we learned? - Rudd is one of the mosr cunning and astute politicians we have seen for a long time from the Labor party. And Turnbull is completely ill suited for a life in politics.
