poor old pedro: off the topic?

Hardly. here's bernard keane this afternoon: A pattern involving coordinated News Ltd and Opposition claims against the Government that turn out to be false seems to be emerging.

This squalid little affair is a result of the filth at newscrap getting together with the filth from the LNP.

Dishonesty and immoraility hand in hand with dishonesty and immorality.

They deserve each other.

One might have known the whole thing emanated from the sick and twisted mind of John Winston Howard. We shouldn't have expected any better from Malcolm Turnbull. As he has proved tonight on Channel two he makes the morals of an Alley cat look pretty classy.

> Very Long Bow there, Rob Kruger.

Maybe, Pedro. But it's just as possible to be a government plot as it is to be an opposition plot.

If I were in government (or in the treasury) and I knew there was someone regularly leaking information, (and there are regular leaks from treasury) I would use the tried and tested method of planting false information with a prime suspect and seeing if it leaked.

> The IP address of the originating email can be traced - every pc/Mac has a unique ID.
> You just can’t sent anonymous emails without being traced back to your original sending location.

Wrong! There are several methods of sending an anonymous email which conceal the originating IP. Concealing IP is trivial- Use TOR, or a VPN anonymizer, or I2P, or a simple proxy. There are even websites from which you can send an email in total anonymity. You can absolutely send completely anonymous emails- it's trivial to do so.
FORGING an IP is also possible, and is a common hacking technique.
Hacking the email header and forwarding paths is also easily done.

Whether that was done in this case I don't know. I expect we'll all find out.
Just don't discount the non-obvious possibilities.

Turnbull might have to admit that yes, he did know about the email well before yesterday's exhibition, and that yes, he did have something to do with the whole scam, and throw himself on the mercy of the chamber. Peter Costello has until next Tuesday, 30th June, until his retirement is irreversible. In the light of what has been happening is it beyond possible he might change his mind?

Kevin Rudd might have made a good PM if he hadn't decided that all the ministerial departments had to be run by two people. The person who was given the job together with the inclusion of himself. Stephen Smith could have saved himself a lot of heat from his family by opting out of all the travel, in the knowledge that Kevin Rudd would be doing it twice over.

Rudd has done everything from being an art critic which happens to fall within the jurisdiction of Peter Garrett's portfolio-as with one lightening look at Bill Henson's photo of a young girl, from somewhere in Shanghai, immediately enabled him to state the work to be filth. Oh we in Oz do so not need this kind of moralistic crap.
There are two people in charge of environmental concerns. Peter Garrett, Environment, Heritage and the Arts, and Senator Wong. Rudd himself brings up the tally to three people. the main spokesperson is of course, Kevin Rudd. I am informed that many of the bills which reach the Senate are devoid of detail. Thus making it impossible for anyone to sign these documents lest they find themselves at odds with some future law. In short the man has, entirely by his own interference, rendered the Labor Government down to the level of a farce.
It is my belief that the person to get everything and everyone back on the road again, Australia and the Labor Party, urgently need The Deputy Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, to take over.

Insufficient time to read up this whole string, but just to repeat my comment on the late Fri piece by BK, regarding the provenance of the "fake" email.

Piers Akerman has a quote in the press too today from Grech that refuses to concede the "email dooesn't exist".

So the AFP say what they have found is consistent with a forgery. Well lots of things are "consistent" in the AFP's world. Just ask Mohammed Haneef!

My comment still holds and bares repeating methinks:

"Fair comment Spike, but the AFP warrant and search of GG’s ‘puter still seems equivocal to me. Who sent it to him? Who created it? How come it came from Treasury (?) and yet we were assured even a deleted version would have already been found?

Was it a WP version only? Or maybe Gmail or such like? I give up.

GG needs a good lawyer pronto, that’s for sure. And said (!) lawyer present at any interviews with the AFP too I would say.

As Mark Riley said on 7 on Sunday night news - who ever faked this email ‘is going to gaol’. That’s grim."

And to add my other comment on Stilgerian (spelling?) yesterday, namely that hot desking a send from someone else's work station is more than conceivable, but by who??? And why did the original sweep assured to us by the PM not throw this up?

Certainly we are getting closer to the truth about all this deception but we are not there yet and yes the bottle is still spinning to leave someone naked in the middle of Martin Place on a cold winter day.

But I do find it touching that the Canberra Press Gallery are so trusting of an "indicative" advice from the AFP. And that's even if Rudd and Charlton and Swan are entirely innocent. Indeed if all the main players including Turnbull and Grech are innocent except for a dose of hyperbole as Gerard Henderson might say (as per SMH column today).

It's like playing the game 'getting warmer'. After Joe Hockey baulked at answering if he'd been in recent contact with Godwin Gretch it seemed the heat went up a little. Turnbull also refused to comment on a Hockey Gretch link other than reiterating their working relationship years ago around the time of HIH. Ideal outcome if Costello exited the House carrying his own time-bomb.

Turnbull and the media have been at this like a dog at a bone for weeks now, based on what? A car dealer that got nothing and a fake email. Now the stench of real, not imagined, corruption is emerging. The Libs have been playing dangerous crash through or crash politics ever since Turnbull became leader. This ain’t over yet folks, not by a long shot. Heads will roll.

I've been to 3 parish fetes and a goat f**king and it has been a long time since I have seen a comedy of errors such as this.

I've just finished reading Annabel Crabbe's quarterly essay on Turnbull and given what I read there, I'm surprised that someone as caculating as Turnbull to "push the last pass" and given away an intercept.

I think that there are goingto be a few more interesting revelations before this is over.

Turnbull on AM more or less admitted that he had spoken to Grech over the last few months. He refused to reveal what he had discussed with him. His possible complicity in a conspiracy is worth pursuing.

Nobody is going to come out of Ute-gate smelling of anything else but shit. But as Pedro said, litigation lawyers are the art form of deceit. Malcolm Turnbull gets caught out in a squalid scam linked by an employee of Rupert Murdoch. Voilá blame the Prime Minister. Then he alters course. Blame Wayne Swan, apparently because the email was written by someone possibly working in Treasury. Why?
Because the syntax is similar. WTF? Why doesn't he go back to making money? Better than making a horse's arse out of himself.
Is it all to divert the public's attention away from appalling ignoring of ETS and the bill before the house at present?
What a way to run a country.

Oh and for those Harry Potter fans like me: Godwin Grech might be a Dickensian name but his literary likeness is very modern indeed:

Who else believes the 2 major parties' meltdown over "integrity" is incredibly ironic?

I think they may have invented the next peoples' festival theme: We've had Sydney Writers Festival., and Sydney Film Festival. Now we are having the Tipping Point Denial Festival ....meaning the two major parties are busy talking about themselves endlessly and effectively useless. Who else is not surprised at this timing with climate running on a parallel track?

This 'narcisistic rage', to borrow a phrase from Australian Story tonight, is quite the profound example of sublimation of their failure on the issue of their lifetime (and their childrens' life too).

They really, really just don't get it.

Does anyone seriously believe that Grech acted alone in this matter? Any reasonable understanding would assume that the involvement of at least an Liberal apparatchik, and possibly others higher up the food chain, was highly likely. A good hard look at Abetz, for example, is highly warranted.

The pattern of fraudulent behavior we are seeing from various Liberal politicians and their various hangers-on is evidence of how far Howard degraded the political morality of his party. The shabbiness that was Howard's hallmark has become the hallmark of the party he once utterly dominated.

Well said, David Sanderson.

The Liberals have the Born To Rule: Convict. attitude. It's that simple here.

Malcolm is an effective litigation lawyer, but a totally dud politician.

Litigation lawyers don't make good pollies IMHO.

Great stuff George....they wouldn't dare give the Govt a sniff of a dbl dissolution at the moment Spike....I suspect Turnbull will want whoever did this to him. He can be a very bad bad man and a vicious enemy. Someone best be very careful, it will come out eventually and if mal has to fall on his sword he will take others with him. This Opposition is a disgrace and how anyone can possibly stick up for them is unbeleivable...I read some of the contributions to Lewis column in the Tele and it verges on the insane some of the stupid contributions supporting the Libs, they just dont want to see what is staring them fair in the face.

Incidently dont know how many here see the absurd polls run by Sky News. I mailed them asking why they do not show how many vote in their silly biased questions. Biased because the socio eco group that would subscribe to Foxtel and watch Sky News would be in the main the more affluent segment of society, Lib supporters. Of course if you ask their news editor something that actually points out a perceived anomoly in their transmission, silence prvails. I asked why they do not do surveys to gauge the number of viewers, age groups, time zones they are watched. Nothing in reply, which sums up their arrogant attitude. Being a Murdoch owned company of course what more can one expect but arrogance and up yours mate.

Turnbull is now saying that Swan should apologise because the fake email originated in Treasury. The man is an idiot because he thinks we are idiots who will swallow whole whatever sophistry he comes up with.

He will not make it to the next election.

Stay on topic, Mr Squid! The Murdoch press are no doubt in the pocket of the Neocons like Turnbull, but this thread is about Turnbull's office being linked directly to the Utegate scandal.

Do you have anything relevant to add to the thread??

I think people are missing the point: this issue is a Murdoch gutter press circulation-building concotion, which managed to suck in an Opposition not fit to hold the office.

Australia needs to look at the role of newscrap, and its acolytes in the ABC, in promoting this sordid and despicable affair.

Newscrap, ably abetted by its pathetic parrots in Brissenden and Uhlmann on the ABC, has proved in this (who really needed proof after its Pauline Hanson lies) that it is utterly lacking in professionalism and competence, integrity and honesty, and journalistic ethics, not to mention any form of basic morality.

Australia's media is contemptible. No wonder journalists rank lower than used car salesmen and politicians themselves in public opinion polls.

Joe Hockey is the one coming out on top here. he seems so nice and cuddly, but I reckon he's as ruthless and scheming as Howard.

This is surely a crafty set up of Malcolm Turnbull by the crafty Gubmint.

Very Long Bow there, Rob Kruger.

Let's be realistic here. Paul Lindwall, Turnbull staffer until the end of May (coincidence?) sends an email from his Treasury pc through a bulk email or email falsifier program to Mr Grech at his home address. The IP address of the originating email can be traced - every pc/Mac has a unique ID. It's traced back to Treasury. Ding, ding!!

Why did the AFP go straight to Treasury after finding the email on Grech's home computer?

You just can't sent anonymous emails without being traced back to your original sending location. If it's a government computer they will be able to trace any mails sent through a CD-loaded program that wasn't even installed.

This is surely a crafty set up of Malcolm Turnbull by the crafty Gubmint.
Plant a juicy email that is obviously false and would be discovered, and use it as bait to draw the opposition into making utter gooses of themselves.
