I’m a rusted-on ALP voter and campaign volunteer, but I’m also a cat-owner (or perhaps more accurately a cat with a more-than-purely-coincidental resemblance to First Dog’s Kevin Rudd’s Cat chooses to live with me) and I can’t accept that anyone who’d written this letter to the cat would have subsquently strangled it. I’ll never vote for Turnbull but I will defend him on this question.

Of course Turnbull wasn’t writing to his girlfriend’s cat. Does it need spelling out? He was writing to her. Cf. a once well known poet and playwright’s

“And then the lover,
Sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad
Made to his mistress’ eyebrow. “

Pericles, in order, yes, yes, hell no, there are far more interesting and worthwhile things to read (hagiographies and self-serving pap come to mind). But what does this have to do with writing to your girlfriend’s cat?

Of course we all enjoy gossip, and this confirms Richard Ackland’s dedication to his craft because he must be aware (surely he is aware despite or because of so many hundred instances of ambiguous evidence) that his looseness with facts and taste for silly trivia and appearing to enjoying it as if it were a triumph of investigatory or analytical journalism doesn’t earn him respect.
