This piece of dross wouldn’t get a pass if it was a 6th grade history essay.

Malcom G has got it about right.

P.S.
Refering to Shah Pehlavi as “a much better fellow than his father”, without a mention of SAVAK, is almost worthy of the Keith Windshuttle award for “fair and banaced” history.

Both the author of this article and the editors at Crikey should be ashamed. A history of Iran in the 20th Century that doesn't mention either the Mossadeqgovernment of the 1950s or Operation Ajax is just plain wrong.

Mike Stuchbery: That was a neat little thumb-nail sketch of Iran. I venture to suggest, at this point of Iran’s history, that the Ayatollah Ali Khamenei will reign peacefully until he dies in his virtuous bed. In a deeply religious populace is is virtually impossible to change fundamentally a theocracy, whereas governments come and go. Mahmoud Amadinejad should continue to have the job tied down, and he’ll do it in a canter.
