		<description>I still think Debus got a terrible demotion on winning a marginal seat in the first ministry. He was one of the pillars of the Carr Govt providing competence amongst dross. It was obvious why he was smeared by then leader Peter Debnam, as a threat too far in a marginal seat. 

Then Rudd gives him a nowhere, nothing ministry after AG and Environment. When practically no other ALP MP had ministerial experience. That doesn&#039;t add up to me. 

As I&#039;ve written elsewhere, the footage of the first party room meeting with Rudd waltzing in and putting the freeze on Debus was redolent of a West Wing script. If anything Debus&#039;s fate indicates a fashion on the current federal government for shallow PR over substance.

Anyway that&#039;s the story for me, I defer to others on the internecine Blue Mtns machinations as per the Mitchell story here.</description>
