And it has to be said: though ‘the public’ is allegedly outraged en bloc, plenty of people didn’t think the sketch was all that bad. If I’d seen the show before hearing about all the outrage, and someone had visited from the future and told me that one of the skits was going to outrage ‘the public’, but refused to tell me which one, I would not have guessed the ‘realistic wishes’ sketch. Rather, I would have picked ‘the Fritzls’ sketch immediately following. And so, apparently, did the Chaser people themselves, since they pre-empted complaints by appending ‘The Fritzls’ with the Python-style ‘idiot complains to the ABC’ sketch. In any event, the outrage has been fuelled and fanned by elements in the media which is apparently full of resentment towards The Chaser – as evidenced by Crikey itself in recent weeks, with this series of strange bone-picking articles from the Footy Show ex-producer.
