The discussion of Tiananmen generally in the West is clearly naive.

In the same way that General George Marshall was forced to choose between bombing Hiroshima & Nagasaki with the loss of 300 thousand civilians OR launching an invasion of the Japan with the estimated loss of 1 million Allied troops, so was the decision made by the Deng to end the Tiananmen protest.

How long will uninformed bleeding hearts continue this facile campaign against the Chinese leadership.

And yet, I recall the visit of both George W. Bush and the Prime Minister/President? of China, and their appearances in our national parliament. I recall that for the first time in our history, people from another country(US) were allowed to take lethal weapons into our National Parliament. I also recall the violent attempt by Coalition members to deny Bob Brown and other members of the Greens from handing Bush a petition re David Hicks. I also recall, that both Kerry Nettle and Bob Brown's punishment barred them from attending Parliament the following day to listen to the welcome by the Speaker and/or PM Howard, and address by the very same person who was linked to the atrocities of Tiananmen Square 20 years ago. Amazing!

Today, we have Rudd making the correct 'noises' about democracy/justice blah blah, and yet, when a woman from China who was almost full term in her pregnancy begged not to be returned to China(and probable termination of her pregnancy) during Howard's term of govt, I don't recall Rudd speaking out in her defence of justice. I don't recall those self righteous upholders of life in the now Opposition championing her cause. Others in the Greens and Democrats did, as did I and many others, mainly women. She was deported, her foetus was aborted. It's all a matter of degree, and what makes a good 'grab' before the TV cameras! Great stuff! I must be getting old; my aversion to bullshit is showing!
