The Public Health system and Medicare is an important part of the health care system in this country, however to suggest that Malcolm Turnball's support of the Private Health Insurance Rebate is "unconscionable" is a bit rough.
In my opinion, the public system should be available to those who need it the most (i.e those of low incomes/on pensions/welfare) while an effective private system should be available for those that can afford it. The Medicare levy and Private Health Insurance rebate provide both the "carrot and stick" approach to ensure that wealthy Australians move into Private health insurance and the Public system remains avaliable for those that really need it.
In you look at both the UK system (with the fully public NHS system under intense strain) and the US system (where fully privatised health care ensures that the poor struggle to get access to medical treatment); it is clear that the hybrid Australian system remains the most effective system available.
Let's not kick a health care system that even with it's problems, remains one of the best in the world
