Irwin, just wondering, given you formerly worked for Greenpeace with a democratic base of say conservatively 50,000 signed up supporters, what is the Climate Institute's democratic base?

If it is a think tank as such could you indicate specifically it's funding sources. I read that it got substantial seed funding from Bob Carr.

I find this interesting as Carr exploited the people's love of the south east forests to wedge the NSW Liberal and National parties and win the very close March 1995 state election. He promised (yes an election promise) to close the Eden Chip Mill.

Last year the Chip Mill as per usual logged a million tonnes of native forest including we heard recently a 600 year old Eucaplyptus fastigata at Brown Mountain in East Gippsland. Of course Carr has left representative politics a long time now having signed on within weeks or months with Macquarie Bank in 2005 or so.

Personally I never doubted the ALP's lack of conviction and environmental opportunism. If the recession wasn't actually reducing greenhouse emissions we would indeed be cooked already. I fully expect we will be regardless - like the frog and the scorpion, it's in our institutional nature.

"With the prospect of a 25% reduction on 2000/1990 levels by 2020 on the table, business will now, without delay, have to factor this into medium and long-term investment decisions. "

2000/1990? What does this mnea? Is the reduction from 2000 or 1990 levels? Is this a deliberate attempt to muddy the waters, and if so what does the Climate Institute have to gain from acting as the Government's proxy obsfucators?

This piece contrasts mightily with Bernard Keane's analysis of the government's adjustment. As a reluctant cynic, I'd say Bernard is closer to the truth of it.
