I am a very obscure writer indeed, and when I pitched a story to The Monthly recently, they sent me a perfectly polite answer only a few days later.

Well thank goodness that Manne was able to tell his side of the story and paint Warhaft as both an overwhelmed woman (as women with responsibility are prone to be) in addition to being hysterical and unreasonable. Isn't it lucky that there were two reasonable and benevolent patriarch's at hand to save her and then screw her publicly afterward.

COSTELLO?! Was she KIDDING?! Isn't it bad enough that He Who Will Neither Challenge Nor Go Away regularly assaults us by his mere presence from the pages of the Fairfax press, without having to avoid him in The Monthly as well?

La Warhaft would probably have put him on the cover. Smirking. This would've been the biggest circulation discourager since the current one, featuring that weird guy who lese majeste'd the Thai royal family until he finally got banged up and got to snivel for Aussie tabloid TV. And The Monthly. What an extraordinary decision that was.

COSTELLO?!

I fall back, spent. Except to thank Robert Manne for his elegant and dignified personal explanation.
