Great article, and the sentiment is spot on. A couple of things - don't fall for the propaganda infomercials of late. The evidence is far from clear whether there really is a boom in FHBs. What is being reported is that the PROPORTION of FHBs has increased substantially. That's true, but the greatest factor is that non-FHBs have dropped to their lowest NUMBER in 8 years! (see www.geocities.com/homes4aussies/nonFHBs.jpg). The NUMBER of FHBs has increased from their very low levels of last year, but that's not saying much since they're roughly back to 2007 levels (perhaps a little higher, but we'll have to wait for a few more months of data to see if that is real or just "noise"). It would be great to dispel this other "realestate truth" which is becoming entrenched that at the moment "it's cheaper to buy than rent". Complete baloney, and hopefully the new spreadsheets on my website (www.geocities.com/homes4aussies) will help to clear the air. Keep up the good work Crikey!

I believe another reason for this grant is to help people who can't afford their property unload that property to others who can afford it today. Something like a 'pass the hot potato' out of a looming bankruptcy.
