Whatever you may think of Senator Fielding it doesn't apply to Nick Xenophon Mungo. He is not the tortured creature such as Fielding has shown himself to be. He works with people and isn't unreasonable and certainly voted for the alcopops.

Senator Xenophon was resoundingly elected by the people of SA who have great faith in him because he stays close to the people and encourages others to be involved inpolitics. The major parties in SA are probably very glad he has moved to the federal sphere as he was most effective in gaining concessions in the SA parliament although he didn't have the balance of power.

He will be glad to work with the government but understands that the government is ruled by powerful forces including their donors. He limits himself to donations under $500 in contrast.

His foray into the $42 B package was resoundingly supported by the people of SA who believe that work on the Murray is urgent and will benefit the nation. However it was the only way to get a sense of urgency on this issue. It will have done him no harm at all and will also benefit the nation.

Rather than calling Xenophon and Fielding 'independents', can we cut to the chase and call them 'ear-markers'?

Oie: The Greens are showing maturity and balance. You may not like it. Never-the-less the voters seem to be liking it.

Marie Mannik: Irrespective of Nick Xenophon's almost winning two seats, on primary votes (what was the losing margin I wonder.) It is impossible to know the damage being done by these independent whores, for that is what they are. Each time they lure the government to their beds. The practiced whores stop, slap their faces and immediately up the price. What an appalling example of compulsive greed to encourage the youth of today to be even more demanding. More greedy.

There is nothing that can explain this behaviour. No wonder married couples demand instant MacMansions. It is obscene.

Mungo couldn't be more wrong about Senator Xenophon's mandate. Rather than being the lucky recipient of insane preference deals as Fielding was, he came close to earning two senate seats on primary votes alone. Which is unprecedented for an independent. He received no preferences from either major party.

Mungo seems to have a complete blind spot where South Australia is concerned. He also demonstrated egregious ignorance of South Australian electoral affairs last year: see comments at http://www.crikey.com.au/Politics/20080728-Mungo-We-are-witnessing-the-last-days-of-the-Nationals.html

1. We call in Autumn in Australia
2. Nick Xenephon (whatever you think of him) was extremely well known in his home state of South Australia before he entered Commonwealth politics. Just because people in Sydbourne didn't know him doesn't equate to 99.9% of the population
3. Why this demonisation of independents? They have the same power as anyone else, that is ONE VOTE. If both major parties vote like sheep and cede decisions to those who make their own decisions, have a go at them.
