In the finest of NSW Labour Governemnt traditons of develop at all costs especially in safe opposition seats the 'farmers friend' Minister Macdonald seems to be in an unholy haste to place himself at the middle of the 'food versus fuel' debate.
Perhaps he should consider the views of Federal Minister Bourke on this topic.
We can have our fuel and eat it too as long as we hasten slowly and apply some decent scientific minds as to how we may extract the valuable fuel resources while preserving this 'World significant" food bowl.
By the way the issues are not dissimilar for the Great Darling Downs in QLD,another 'World significant' food bowl that just happens to have rich energy reserves beneath it. Perhaps Prime Minister Rudd, an erstwhile Qld farmer may like to take an interest in this.

This will be a good one for the Copenhagen conference at year's end. Here we are in Australia merrily ridding ourselves of food producing land in favour of king coal. I thought the whole idea of the urgency in the climate change debate was to rid ourselves of our dependence on fossil fuels. Not so in NSW or Canberra it seems.
Anna Bligh is also fixed on opening new coal mines in Queensland at the expense of fertile land. I guess the recent floods, bushfires ,cyclone and oil spill have been relegated to the dim distant past in voters' minds as far as the political class is concerned.
