I fear that the prediction for US forces in Iraq will be correct. The US currently has more than 700 (yes, 700!) military bases overseas -- see Chalmers Johnson's book, Nemesis - The Last Days of the American Republic. It still has large bases in Japan and Germany, 63 years after the end of WW II and almost 20 years after the end of the Cold War. Why? Imagine the reaction of the US to China having military bases in South or Central America. They can't even accept democratic socialism in Venezuela. The military/industrial complex and the hubris of so-called exceptionalism will be very tough for Obama to overcome, even if he has a mind for it.
