For the government to bail out some business it has to take the bailout money from somewhere else. As it is taxpayers’ money they either take it from another project such as hospitals or schools or increase taxes. The point is that although the worker at Pac Brands may save their jobs the cost has to be borne by workers somewhere else because the govt doesn’t have any money itself – it takes it from us and spends it. So rather than simply looking at the immediate effect perhaps it is time that people start looking at the downstream effect of government largesse and realise that someone is losing out every time the government gives money to anyone and they need to decide whether they want to perhaps forgo their job 12 months down the track to save another’s today.
