The Colonel: your mention of Miranda Devine's attitude is yet another example of her exceedingly poor, contrarian, judgement of important issues.

I haven't read her columns for years, as it doesn't achieve anything.

If The Age dares to reduce its Melbourne sports coverage and journos then the death of the paper is imminent. Its the one shining light that still exists with the paper in particular AFL.
Its an interesting call by John McLeish ABN Amro that Fairfax circulation revenue should continue to hold up. If recent changes to The Age are any indication, the decision makers are doing their utmost to cut circulation. The decision to reduce the Education section of The Age to 2 pages within the paper, consisting mostly of ads for private schools (the only ones with money to spend on self promotion) and a series of brief blurbs directing us to The Age online would certainly make schools reconsider their subscriptions. Gone are the articles highlighting student work, VCE information and so on. Gone therefore is the next generation of Age readers.

At the launch of the Aussie version of the Spectator last night famous UK editor Andrew Neil was fairly positive about newspapers in general but did say some will go to the wall-but those with strong websites-like The Guardian will do even better. He also had a dig at the UK Sun's "Archie" debacle saying it was a portent of doom for the tabloids-but then he was fired by the Sun King so I suppose he would.

But the assembled Fairfax hacks who were there en-masse were looking very miserable with most saying the atmosphere at Fairfax is depressing. But one hackette from the SMH seemed very upbeat with many a toss of her black locks and a hearty laugh-the fragrant Miranda Devine.
