Good article, but I still wonder if the proof of stage 1, really validates projections in stages 2 and 3. Indeed time will tell. It also confirms there is $9 billion plus still be accounted for.

Before we might say the Dec handout worked, should we know how the increase in consumer credit 2008 over 2007 compares with the comparable increase in expenditure?

Does anyone have the figures?

Here in Tassie we hear "500 new houses will go a long way to easing the public housing waiting list."

Yeah sure... How about the $10,000 reward for info on the arson of one house every fortnight? (the current rate of public housing burnt up)

Sure it'll take a few years to burn down the new ones. But us taswegians think long term.

Possum, could you comment on the November figures? The graph (I'm looking at the original series line) seems to show a deeper trough for November 2008 than November 2007, and common sense would suggest that people held off spending until they had received the Government handout. If this is so, how much does it offset the December bounce?

It worked at increasing retail spending. That is not the same as it worked at producing an increase in economic activity, or necessarily improving the bottom line of the businesses involved on anything more than a transient basis. If all that was needed to acheive economic rescue was to improve the bottom line of retailers, then why not simply send Gerry Harvey an RBA check rather than going through all the pretence of transporting giant televisions. As a patch for a hole in lending to businesses, a retail stimulus is fairly inefficient and nowhere near the size of the problem. How about just underwriting exisiting loans on small to medium businesses?
