When Alan Kohler writes or speaks about the economy, I always have the impression that I understand the situation and his argument. For anyone not versed in the requisite concepts and jargon it is difficult to differentiate between sound economics and political spin. Alan makes it comprehehsible and relates it to the practical concerns of the general reader. I appreciate his wit and gentle humour too.

Great article and I hope you don't mind me making the same comments as I made under Adam Schwab's article. Of course it was a political announcement. Goverments around the world know that their bailouts and stimulus packages have no chance of fixing the crisis (whatever that means). They have moved back to the next line of defence. Their aim now, and I believe quite rightly, is to minimise social unrest. The natives ARE getting restless. National strikes (France) and countrywide riots (Russia and China) have already started. Civil war is not impossible. I say keep the natives happy even if it means feeding them bulls**t and loading their kids and grandkids up with debt.

The first three days of this week have been politically quite extraordinary.

Rudd will have undoubtedly put the Federal budget in deficit this year because of quite unprecedented reckless spending and not because of diminished tax returns.

He has talked down the economy in the first 10 months of his rule.

Now, he adds to problem rather than the solution.

He has merely added to fear induced negative sentiment and liquidity contraction.

He now wants to fritter away $43 billion on top of the $10 billion pre-Christmas cash handout and in addition to the $4 billion 'Ruddbank' support for the commercial property market.

It was only a short time ago that he gave an unlimited and universal bank guarantee without the prior approval and support off the Governor of the Reserve Bank, Glenn Stevens.

That proved a very poor decision and this "stimulus package" is equally poor.

The extraordinary thing is that the mainstream media, seemingly, are complicit in giving Rudd unwarranted support and acquiescence.

He now wants to fritter away $43 billion on top of the $10 billion pre-Christmas cash handout and in addition to the $4 billion ‘Ruddbank’ support for the commercial property market.

It was only a short time ago that he gave an unlimited and universal bank guarantee without the prior approval and support off the Governor of the Reserve Bank, Glenn Stevens.

That proved a very poor decision and this “stimulus package” is equally poor.

The extraordinary thing is that the mainstream media, seemingly, are complicit in giving Rudd unwarranted support and acquiescence.
