Perhaps if you substitute ‘ballast’ for ‘balance’ it will become clear what is really going on. At least in the context of the ABC. There is no other term which applies to the Board (ie Maurice Newman) decision to ‘invite’ Rupert Murdoch to present the Boyer lectures. He probably thought the excess weight of all that ballast would provide balance. It does explain why ships suddenly list. Too much ballast on one side or other.

For “balance” read “compromise.” Then try “sell-out” and you are close to what Rudd and Wong have announced. But that was always how it was going to be - Rudd is not a doer or a planner or even a thinker - just a pragmatic politician silly enough to think he can spend his way out of all the disasters that confront him.
Either global warming is happening and caused by humans, or it is not. Rudd has clearly decided that it is not,or if it is too bad. He also knows he won’t be around to pick up the pieces.

Dear Mungo has been pathetically inadequate in his unfairness. The most serious of backdowns by a PM .the greatest of backflips, yet half the article derides Alston. Please Mungo , Oh unsinkable turd that you are (a phrase of yours) ,please get into Crudd as he deserves. He has just become the world’s greatest laughing-stock.
