Of course stories about weird sexual happenings will attract a lot of readers, particularly if the title of the story offers clues as to its content. Three 'serious' media consumers might each read ten stories off a newspaper's website. One consumer might read stories about the Liberal Party, business and travel...and the penis in the park bench. A second might read stories about the ALP, the environment, industrial relations....and the penis. The third might read stories about news from their state, world affairs, a sports article....and the penis. Just because these stories individually attract a lot of readers does not mean that newspapers need to drop serious news coverage. In the example I've given, none of the readers would have found the penis story if they hadn't gone searching for their preferred serious news coverage.
