Actually I remember helping organise as rep for The Wilderness Society in Sydney an event for Tricia Caswell of ACF, Milo Dunphy as founder of Total Environment Centre, and Karenne Jurd as director of The Wilderness Society all speaking on a unity ticket in 1994 at the forecourt of the Opera House.

Their unified message was to commence an end to native forest logging in Australia. That was the high point of the green movement attempts to reform the logging industry, all but destroyed by Keating and various federal and state premiers since. Here's a picture of the day here (if you scroll down a bit). High point because ACF's allegiance to the ALP was well understood at that time.

http://www.sydneyalternativemedia.com/id56.html

Milo is shown holding the microphone. And yes that's one hell of a banner, about $5000 worth apparently donated to TWS. It snagged on the overhang and almost stalled the gig so I did a little act to kick it free hanging from the steel fence (no harness but I wouldn't recommend it).

So Lionel, Love the article, but the CMFEU? Are they related to the CFMEU or are they some kind of splinter group (SKOSG?)? Its a pity that an article can lose some of its impact through minor errors. And kind of funny that the advertisement embedded in the article is for the ACTU's rightsonsite.org.au campaign, backed by none other than one of the unions mentioned in the article for organising polical betrayal.

The Nationals, indeed, should be applauded for the fact that they stood and and were counted, over this issue. The Labor and Liberals are more interested in fattening their retirement options by investing in this new lurk, than dealing with the reality that the world needs food and should be bending over backwards to support all resource areas that produce food. "Greed is good" is still the mantra from the ruling classes and their acolytes. The change of government has not changed this mantra one iota!

"plantation forests...pathetic carbon storage"

It's even worse than that. Because they absorb more light than farmland, this completely nullifies their beneficial CO2 storage effects, at least in the temperate latitudes of southern Australia. Converting farmland to forest does bugger all for our climate.
